DSG / Gearbox Tuning
Transmission tuning for DSG and automatic gearboxes, faster, sharper shifts and limits raised to match a tuned engine.
Book a remap →Most people think of remapping as an engine job, but on a modern automatic or dual-clutch car the gearbox has its own computer: the TCU, or transmission control unit. It can be remapped too.
DSG tuning, gearbox remapping and TCU tuning all describe the same thing, and it is a genuinely different job to mapping the engine.
The gearbox can cap the engine
The TCU decides when to change gear, how quickly, how firmly, how much clutch pressure to apply, and, crucially, how much torque it will accept from the engine.
That last one matters enormously. A gearbox with a factory torque limit can simply refuse to let a tuned engine deliver what it is now capable of. Map the engine alone and you can leave a chunk of the improvement stuck behind the transmission, which is exactly what people are describing when they say a mapped car “feels held back through the gears”.
What gearbox tuning changes
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Shift speed | Noticeably faster changes, particularly under acceleration |
| Shift points | Holding gears sensibly instead of hunting or upshifting too early |
| Clutch pressure | Firmer clamping so the clutches cope with added torque rather than slipping |
| Torque limiters | Raised to match what the engine now actually produces |
| Launch and kickdown | More decisive response when you ask for it |
Which gearboxes
The VAG DSG boxes (DQ250, DQ200, DQ381, DL501 S tronic and relatives) across Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda and SEAT/Cupra are the most commonly tuned, and the most predictable.
Plenty of conventional torque-converter automatics, including BMW ZF boxes, can also be improved. Tell us the vehicle and we will confirm what is possible on yours.
Engine map, gearbox map, or both?
They do different jobs and pair well. If you have already had an engine remap and the car feels like it is being held back through the gears, the gearbox is usually the reason.
If you want the whole car to feel sharper, doing both together makes sense and avoids paying twice for the diagnostic time.
On wear: gearbox tuning does ask more of the clutch packs. Done sensibly and matched to the engine’s actual output, that sits within design tolerance, which is why the two should be considered together rather than in isolation.
As always, the original transmission map is stored before any change, so it can be put back to standard at any time.
Faster gear changes
Shifts happen with more speed and authority, notably better under acceleration.
Improved throttle-to-shift response
The gearbox reacts to your inputs rather than second-guessing them.
Better gear hold
Gears are held longer under hard driving, no unwanted upshifts mid-corner.
Launch and kick-down refinement
Launch behaviour and kick-down response tuned for your preference.
Works alongside engine remapping
Pair with an engine remap for a fully optimised powertrain.
Frequently asked
Which gearboxes do you tune?
DSG (VW Group 6- and 7-speed), S-Tronic, PDK, and a range of other dual-clutch and automatic transmissions. Contact us with your make and model to confirm.
Will gearbox tuning affect the warranty?
If your vehicle is within manufacturer warranty, modifications may affect coverage. Checks with your dealer are advised. Out-of-warranty vehicles are unaffected.
Do I need an engine remap at the same time?
No. Gearbox tuning works well independently. That said, pairing it with an engine remap gives you a fully matched powertrain and the most cohesive result.
Is it reversible?
Yes. The original TCU calibration is backed up before any changes are made.
Which manufacturer do you drive?
Every map is written for your exact make, model and engine. Pick yours to see the models we work on most.
