The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by recirculating a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake. Over time — particularly on high-mileage or city-driven vehicles — EGR valves and coolers accumulate carbon deposits, leading to sticking, failure, and ultimately engine management warnings or limp mode.
A failed or heavily contaminated EGR system causes symptoms including rough idling, reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and a persistent check engine light. Left unaddressed, a sticking EGR valve can cause further issues downstream.
